What Is VG/PG E-Liquid?

What are VG and PG, and how do they affect your e-liquid?

Whenever you look at e-liquid, there are several variable factors that you’ll need to consider before you make your choice. One of the most significant and most apparent is flavor. There are thousands of different flavors to choose from, including fruits, candy, desserts, drinks, and many more.

Did you know that the VG/PG ratio can influence the flavor of the e-liquid that you choose? Let’s take a look at what VG and PG are, and the role that they play in your e-liquid!

What are VG and PG, and how do they affect your e-liquid?

Almost every e-liquid that you look at will have a VG/PG ratio listed on the bottle or the ingredients. There are some 100% VG e-liquids, but they aren’t as common as the regular VG/PG e-liquids. Let’s take a look at what VG and PG and the role that they play in your e-liquid.

  • Vegetable Glycerin (VG) – Vegetable Glycerin is a thick compound with a naturally sweet flavor. VG is a natural compound made from vegetable fats, and it’s found in a variety of different household items and foods. VG is responsible for the vapor clouds that you experience when you use a vaporizer or e-cigarette. The higher the VG percentage, the more vapor your e-liquid will produce. However, there are some drawbacks to VG. It’s incredibly thick and doesn’t work well on its own in smaller e-cigarettes because it blocks the coils quickly. It has no odor, but it does have a sweet taste and doesn’t absorb flavor very well on its own.
  • Propylene Glycol (PG) – Propylene Glycol is used in a variety of different medicinal products, including some asthma inhalers. In e-liquid, PG is used to provide the ‘throat hit’ that many people associate with smoking traditional cigarettes. Propylene Glycol is completely odorless and flavorless. It also carries flavors well and helps to reduce the thickness of the e-liquid. Some people may experience negative side-effects or allergic reactions when they use e-liquids with PG in them. If you notice any negative side-effects after you start vaping, you should stop vaping immediately.

What is the best VG/PG ratio for me?

When it comes to e-liquid, everyone’s tastes and requirements are different. The VG/PG ratio you choose will depend on what you’re looking to get out of your vaping experience.

  • Throat Hit – If you just quit smoking and you’re chasing a definite throat hit, then you want more PG and less VG. Higher PG ratios also usually come with more nicotine. Perfect for people that have just quit smoking or trying to quit smoking.
  • Smooth Vaping – If you want a smoother vaping experience with less throat hit, then you should go with a higher VG ratio in your e-liquid.
  • Cloud Chasing – If you are using a powerful mod and chasing big clouds of vapor, you want a 100% VG e-liquid with no nicotine. The more VG you use, the bigger the clouds can be!
  • Stealth Vaping – If you vape in public and you’re trying to draw attention to yourself, then higher PG is where you should be. Less VG means less vapor and ultimately, less attention.
